Boat Lane, 1981

A pretty lane leading down to the River Aire and previously to Allerton Ferry over the Aire. At one time a well-used and surfaced road when the ferry was in use. Now in need of repair and used only by farmers, walkers and fishermen.

Formerly farming and grazing land but mining subsidence caused the land level to be lowered and the area became permanently covered with water. Now a haven for wild fowl as can be seen by the nesting swans. Reeds provide shelter for the birds.

In the background are the houses of Allerton Bywater and Hollinhurst. On the left in far rear is St. Aidan’s opencast mining spoil heap, now removed as part of the restoration.
