Restored almshouses at Woodend

The three restored almshouses in 1988, looking towards East Lodge. They were sold by Methley Estates in 1987/88 and are now excellently restored and occupied. The exterior is almost in the authentic original design with the interior greatly altered and modernised.

The two almshouses on the left are now one residence; the left side door is a ‘dummy’ to complete authenticity. At the rear are dormer bedrooms. At the far end is one almshouse, the interior again vastly altered and modernised. The gardens are tended and at the rear a small part of the Winter Wood has been chopped down, enabling a small garden to be made.

It is good to see them occupied again and well tended and cared for.

The Wheelhouse at Woodend

This long view shows the front of the house. It was originally one house but now, as can be seen from the garden fence, it is divided into two.

Some say this is the oldest house in Methley. The old Leeds-Doncaster highway, not on its present route, passed beside the house and the stage coaches stopped here and had repairs undertaken, particularly wheel repairs in the outbuildings, hence the name Wheelhouse.

It may have been a coaching inn.
